over-reactions

Filed under: thoughts — steve @ 1:25 pm

It’s strange how one will over-react about something. The smallest thing gets blown out of proportion, feelings get hurt, and relationships fall apart. I guess we as humans beings are irrational about a great many things. Looking back one can see how petty and just plain STUPID one was. Retrospect can be a mutha. Sometimes though, one gets lucky and doesn’t pay too high of a price for the over-reacting bit. Haha, and some people are luckier than others. . .

Today is the last day of the first month of the new millenium. January went by too fast. My one comfort is that I have four years of college. I wonder if I can just stay in school all my life.

Hey, if you’re looking for a good CD to buy, get Chevelle’s “Point #1″ on the Squint label. It rocks.

The Coming of Spring

Filed under: writing — steve @ 12:00 pm

Golden clouds drift across a blue meadow
Melting into one; a blanket of gray.
Towering above the valley below,
Waves of frozen mounts block the Sun’s warm ray.

Trees, strip’d by Fall of their verdant glory,
Shackled by the ice chains of Winter’s white.
Proud sentinels, standing pale and hoary,
Guarding their sap from death by Cold’s cruel might.

With an icy grip, Winter rules the land.
Quickly the Sun slides away in defeat.
With Cold and Night at his right and left hand
Winter’s frosty tyranny is complete.

“March!” calls out Spring to his friends, Warmth and Light.
Winter dethroned, fleeing are Cold and Night.

project 86 ‘00

Filed under: music — steve @ 1:30 am

Well, much has happened these past few days. I went to a freakin’ awesome concert, with Leigh, Ben, Dan, Lindsey, and Chad. Playing was Silas, Stavesacre, and Project 86. Definitely one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. Silas is a local rap-rock band, and they got the entire crowd of 300 sweaty guys (maybe 30 girls) jumping and slamming. They were pretty good. Stavesacre (hard rock) stepped up next with front man Mark Solomon, a master showman. They gave a tight, clean set that had me crushed against the stage from the surging pit. Believe it or not, I actually did get skinnier than I already am. Hard to believe, no? Project 86, another rap-rock band, was next. Insane. Just insane. They have so many good songs, and the singer knows how to get the crowd going. The pit was nuts, and I stayed out of it for the most part. Getting slammed by guys twice my size goes against my survival instincts.

One really cool thing that happened was when my glasses flew off after a bit of head banging to Stavesacre. They launched off backwards into the roiling mosh pit. I thought they were gone for good. I would find the broken bits after the concert was over. However, after about 3 minutes I decided to look anyway, so I ducked under the surface of the pit. I tell you that is the strangest thing. On top, the pit is a totally chaotic swirl, but underneath, it is actually pretty peaceful. So, in a forest of legs I clawed around for my glasses. I found them! And they were unscathed and in pristine condition! That was a miracle in my book. Just thought I’d share.

Yesterday, I spent the day with Marcy skiing at Stevens Pass. It was nice: sunny and only a little chilly. We got there about noon and skied until 6:30. The snow conditions weren’t the greatest, but what do you expect after no new snow for a week and heavy use? Washington does have some weird snow though. A kinda of crusty powder or something. It took some getting used to. I was glad to get out on my skis. I did a lot of moguls and mainly just cruised around with Marcy. I think I got my form perfected. Hahahaha, yeah sure. One thing to note it that they have a halfpipe and man-made jumps. That is a definite plus even though the snow was too hard to really use them today. It was a good day.

Tip of the day: Never drive with a crazy woman at the wheel.

Chapel of St. Ignatius

Filed under: general — steve @ 2:38 am

Today I went into town with some friends to investigate a cathedral for a paper. It was the Chapel of St. Ignatius at the Seattle University campus. The outside of it I would almost describe as ugly. It had a very unfinished quality to it. I was rather surprised at its appearance. However, the inside was much much different. It had a very modern look. The architecture was quite interesting and simple. It consisted of clean lines or gentle arcs. These arcs gave the building a slight appreance of flowing upward; the building was ascending towards heaven. To help this illusion was the colors of the chapel. The walls and furniture were white, but the floor was a dark, reflective rock. The building seemed to float in space, suspended by nothing. Off in a corner was a small prayer alcove. In it was tree that was mounted into the floor, lit by an orange glow from hidden lights. Hanging from the tree was a lantern with a single candle behind thick, dark glass. The whole alcove had a ethereal feel to it. It was like a room from a dream.

I think that the Chapel of St. Ignatius was one of the most beautiful churches that I’ve been in. There are many little surprises and interesting design features that make it an absolutely stunning piece of architectual design. I recommend visiting it. I will be going back.

I watched “Run, Lola, Run” tonight. It is a subtitled German movie. I highly recommend it. It was excellent. It had a great soundtrack, and it was a very entertaining. I’m not sure what it is rated. There is a little bit of bad language and one person is shot (very little blood). It’s a new favorite for me.

life continues

Filed under: general — steve @ 11:00 pm

Well, I’m back from Christmas Break. The break was good. I worked a lot and watched too many movies. One night at Kirsten’s, we watched four and a half movies. We were there until almost 7 in the morning. It was cool though becuase I got to hang out with some people that I haven’t seen in a long while.

I feel very fortunate that most of my close friends did not go downhill at college. Most have grown by leaps and bounds. I was very encouraged to see them again.

Well, this Friday wraps up the first week of school. I enjoy all of my classes and I’m very excited about them. I will be taking a arts and culture class (required), Faith & Philosophy, and Human Nutrition. The only bad thing about my classes is that they are all rather big. My Human Nutrition class has 80 people. My other two classes have over forty.

One thing that is weird about the campus is that it seems that it is much quieter. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot going on. I think this is due to a combination of things: school just started, studies are a higher priority, tiredness, and people are starting to fit into more distinct cliques. I find it interesting.
