sleep, where art thou?

Filed under: general — steve @ 10:10 am

So, after a long week of work, I am usually looking forward to getting a long nights rest. “Long” meaning something more than six hours of sleep. However, it seems I have my body trained so well to wake up after only six hours of sleep that even on Saturday mornings I can’t sleep in. This morning I popped awake promptly at 8 am after almost exactly six hours of sleep. I really wanted to sleep more, but I couldn’t. :( I guess the good thing about it is that my Saturday will be even longer!

Jess’ parents are in town this weekend. I’ll probably be hanging out with them quite a bit, and on Sunday we’re going to Teatro Zinzanni for dinner. They don’t allow photography during the show, but if I have my flash off how will they know? I’ll have some pics after I go.

world roundup

Filed under: current events — steve @ 10:02 am

Sorry this was delayed. My friend Nic showed up just when I started it. I have three things.

1. Chirac claims there have been 10,000 deaths from the heat wave that’s hitting France. Unsurprisingly most of the victims were the elderly. It also seems they were left home alone by their vacationing families. Isn’t August the month a lot of French people take family vacations? I think it is. I have a few points. First, Chirac was vacationing in Canada. He’s obviously a smart man; Canada is cool (in both ways). Second, it’s surprising that they had this many deaths. When we get heat waves it’s national news if any more than 20 people die. I just have a hard time imagining ten thousand people dying just from the heat. And the heat wasn’t even that hot! It got to 104 degrees. That doesn’t strike me as a lethal heat. Anyway I think the French should try to appease the Sun so that it will take down the heat a smidge.

2. Some Egyptians want to sue all the Jews in the world for the gold that they took with them when they left Egypt in the Exodus. I think this article is interesting for two reasons. It shows the sheer hatred some people have for the Jews, and it is ludicrously stupid.

3. Finally, the Alabama Chief Justice has been suspended because he refuses to have the monument of the 10 Commandments removed from the courthouse. I think it is highly ironic that the Alabama Attorney General says we have to “uphold the law” while at the same time trying to get this monument moved. Yes, let’s uphold the law and remove any reminders what those very laws were based on . . .

50 hours later…

Filed under: general — steve @ 7:09 pm

Just finished my first week of overtime. All of today was time and a half. :) What’s doubly cool about it is that Friday’s are usually the lightest day of work. I like the idea that I’m getting paid more to do less. I work with two other guys who are quite quiet. Often we all have headphones on listening to our own music, keeping the conversation to a minimum. We do most of our communication through head gestures, head movement, and eye contact. It helps that our most common tasks are simple and routine, so it is easy to determine what the other guy is trying to say. I’d guess on any given day we have maybe 75 lines of conversation. That’s 75 lines shared between three guys for ten hours. I’m the most talkative one on the crew, and most of you who know me know that I’m not very talkative.

Anyway, it’s Friday, I’m not tired yet, and I have the whole night ahead of me. . . but first I’ll do a quick links round-up.

comcast = crap

Filed under: rant — steve @ 7:17 pm

Yeah, Comcast may give me fast cable internet, but I’m still way pissed off at them. Not only do they have THE. WORST. corporate website ever, they also have my account screwed way the heck up. They have my account summary with three different figures in three different places. I’m scared to give any more money to this business. In one place, they show I made a rather large payment 10 days ago. But on the current bill summary AT THE SAME STINKIN’ SITE it says I have made zero payments. Now, I have this letter sitting on my desk saying they will disconnect me in 15 days unless I pay. Problem is the letter was set on August 12th and I just received it today. I hadn’t checked my mail in a few days, so this letter took at least a week to reach me . If I don’t get $40 knocked off from that installation rebate coupon, I’m going to be livid. I’ve had Comcast for hardly 3 months, and I’m already half way to finding a different provider.

media database

Filed under: general — steve @ 10:09 pm

I now have my media database available. You can get to it here. To log in you can either create an account or you can use the login “guest” with the password “guest” (no quotes of course). I might turn off account creation later. I still have a lot of customization to do on it, but believe me, it looks a lot better than the default configuration. The graphics (which you can see some remnants of) and style were straight out of Win95 and XP. Gross.

You know what’s really annoying? A bug bite on a sunburn. If you itch it, you get that horrible sunburned irritation feeling. If you don’t itch it, you have an irritating bug bite that will drive you mad.

I have a lot of stuff I need to write, but I’ve been distracted by other things. Hopefully I’ll get to them all by the end of the week.

databases r0×0rz

Filed under: general — steve @ 10:48 pm

I finally found a software solution that will not only allow me to put all my media into a database but also will allow others to see the data. Tomorrow I should have it fully set up. I already have all my DVDs entered, and hopefully this weekend I’ll start the long task of getting all my CDs into the database as well. I’m really excited about this. It’s awesome. My old DVD list pale’s in comparison what is coming.

Today wasn’t too bad at all. I was a little worried about the transition to the overtime schedule (6 am - 4:30 pm), but it seems that I will be fine. I was mainly concerned about getting enough sleep. I figure just as long as I get to bed before 11 each night I’ll be fine. The weatherman said it was only 73 degrees today. He’s a filthy liar. I must have been at least 85 or something.

Okay, I gotta get to bed.

It’s Friday! My plan for the rest of the day is to play video games and watch bad movies until I collapse. I figure I need to get as much of this stuff out of my system as possible because overtime at work starts on Monday. Overtime will give a nice boost to my paycheck. So, I better get down to business.

SCO vs IBM

Filed under: links — steve @ 2:09 am

Here is a nice summary of the legal battle between a company called SCO and IBM. The reason this is important is because SCO believes they have the IP rights to all things *nix (UNIX, Linux, and all variants of either). Why is this important? At least in the States it is very important because this could significantly alter the computer industry as we know it, and, at worst, basically hand Microsoft a complete and utter strangle hold on the US computer market (as if it isn’t a monopoly already).

I feel like a paranoid nerd. Maybe I am one.

On a completely different note, this (5.1 MB mpg) is the funniest internet video I have ever seen. I was on the floor with teary eyes and an aching stomach. Literally.

a queer church

Filed under: rant — steve @ 8:58 pm

Well it went through. The Episcopalians appointed the first openly homosexual bishop. I’m going to make what should be a relatively safe point. Regardless of the acceptance of homosexuality in the secular world, it should in no way be accepted in the Church. Practicing homosexuality is a sin, and I believe Scripture is pretty darn clear about that. Because it is a sin, nobody who dwells in it and glories in it should be permitted to lead a congregation. This goes with any sin. Any man who is so bold as to take the reigns of a church and lives in unrepentant sin should be immediately removed from any position of authority and rebuked for his lifestyle. As one bishop quoted in the article said, “May God have mercy on his church.”

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for this. What makes us think that God will treat us any differently?

How’s this for a coincidence (?). Just last night I resolved to start reading more/again, and my pastor today extols the pleasures and benefits of reading lots and lots. Pretty interesting.
